We looked into a standard California home with a roof space of 2,000 square feet and a monthly electricity bill averaging $150.
According to Tesla’s own estimates, this house would need a Solar Roof with a capacity of 6.14 kilowatts (kW). Including Tesla’s recommended Powerwall energy storage unit, the total cost after federal tax credits would come to $48,300.
Without the tax incentives, the price tag would be $69,000.
If you decide to forego the Powerwall energy storage system, the Solar Roof alone would set you back about $45,200. It’s worth noting that Tesla also bills for the removal of your existing roof, which in this scenario would cost an additional $7,700.
According to Tesla, these are “estimated costs,” adding a disclaimer that these prices are subject to change based on the specifics of the installation and roof removal process.
This clarification was apparently added after some customers were asked to pay extra, even after agreeing to a specified purchase price in their contracts. If you choose to proceed based on the initial quote, a $250 refundable deposit is required to secure your order.
